Networking is a process by which information such as files, email, documents and resources such as print, disc storage etc shared among multiple machines. Simply put, networking is the process of sharing information between two or more multiple entities. The purpose of networking is to share information only. There is no need for networking if information is not sharing.
In Networking, how machines interact with each other:-
Machines or computers use communication links to communicate with each other. Many types of communication link are used for networking such as Electric cable, Coaxial Cable, Copper cable, Fiber Optic cables, wireless signals etc. Another name media is also used for communication links. All the physical links are called physical media such as electric, coaxial cable, fiber etc. Wireless links is also the second name for wireless media. Examples of wireless media are radio signals, infra red, electromagnetic waves etc. All communication media has its own features and specifications such as speed, signal strength, distance etc.
Computers have to use protocols to communicate with each other. Without the protocol none of the machines can't communicate with each other. Protocol is the set of rules which are used to established contact between two parties. Parties who want to communicate they must obey the protocols and regulations. If both parties don't follow the protocols, then both parties will not understand each other matter and the result will be no connection between them. For example, whenever two people talk in the phone, the first thing to say is "HELLO". When both party say "HELLO", both parties understand that connection is established between them and now they start the process of talking with each other on the phone. In this example "HELLO" is a protocol that directs the both parties how to initiate the process of talking in the phone. Just like this example, computers or machines in the network have to use protocols to communicate or interact with each other. Examples of protocols used in networking TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL, SFTP, SNMP, ICMP etc
